European Cup Quarteira

In 2014 and 2015 I was selected to represent the national team at the European Cup in Quarteira.

This year I had very little hope of going as I had my knee surgery in January. The two first races I did in Algarve served as qualification races. After the first race I knew it would almost be impossible to go as the race didn’t go well at all. The second race went much better and I can admit that some hope of representing the national team was born.

Yesterday the federation made the official communication about the race and who was going to represent Portugal on the 2nd of April and guess what…Im in! I’m on the start list for another European Cup, representing the National Team.

This is almost a bit too good to be true. I had a knee surgery less than 12 weeks ago, did my first run workout (20min) 7 weeks ago and now ill be on the start line for a European Cup…

I feel very calm. Not nervous at all, at least not now. I know I’m not in my best shape. I know that there will be a very strong field with Olympic Athletes and athletes that are ranked TOP10 in the world…but ill do my best. Im sure the crowed will give me that litlle extra.

My achilles will always be the swim. This morning i pulled off a very nice swim session keeping a good average of 1´17/100m (with suit). If i could just translate that in a race i would be super happy…

For those who are interested below is the strart list…

As always I promise to do my best and leave everything out there.

A Big thanks to the team at ComCorpus Clinic, my team mates in Sporting and my coach without you this would not have been impossible.

One step at the time

Busy weekend, with races on Saturday and Sunday!

I was feeling much better racing this weekend than the previous one. Much had to do with the fact that I approached the race in a different way mentally. I wasn’t nervous at all; in fact I was almost afraid I was too calm.

The two first races of the season are always the most competitive. We have athletes from Brazil, Spain, Poland, Chile and Mexico taking part of the race. This is very good to increase the level of competitiveness.

Saturdays race  I was over a sprint distance, counting for the Portuguese Cup.

The swim was chaotic. It was windy, choppy and almost impossible to swim. Despite a hard swim I exit the water in a slightly better position than last weekend.

The bike was a pure pleasure. It must have been my new helmet, OBUSS, from Spiuk that gave me the extra kick.

Pushed hard for 20km and managed to reach the chase pack.

Pushing the girls…

The run was hard, still missing lots of training, but even so I managed and finished 14th among 60 girls. I’m very pleased with my result.

Out on the run

I was the 3rd athlete crossing the finish line from our female team, which meant that I closed the team and we did 2nd among all female teams. We aim to win the Portuguese Cup this year, so we are of to a good start.

I’m still far from a good shape, but I’m trying to take it one step at the time and celebrate small progression

Myself, Vera and Mafalda after the race – Happy Girls

Sunday we had the mixed relay on the schedule over a super sprint distance. We were 2 boys and 2 girls on the team. Everyone had to complete a super sprint (300m swim + 10km bike + 2km run). These races get harder the older you get, full speed from the very beginning. I had so much fun and did a really good 3rd leg of the relay. I managed to recover 5 positions over the very short distance. Once again my bike was the highlight.

Sporting had two teams participating and our best team did a fantastic 2nd place.

To end a long weekend of races we road our bikes for 70km…I can tell you that my legs were complaining quite a lot.

The roads from Algarve to Lisbon are anything but flat.

Motivation is high and ill continue my work towards the main goals of this season…

One step at the time…

Starting from scratch

Lots have happen since last time I wrote.

The treatments at ComCorpus clinic have been going well and I’m back in the pool, on the bike, running and I have completed my first race last Sunday…

I operated my right knee 3 years ago and the comeback was much easier back then. I was 3 years younger and I think I had more energy to through the comeback process back then. Since 2014, when I had my best season I have been going through a roller coaster…lots of ups and downs.

It’s not easy to do your first race after an injury. It’s not about the physical part, I knew that I wouldn’t be in any wonderful shape, but the mental part is hard. Many athletes don’t want to return racing until they are in great shape as they are afraid to “fail” and not perform on their usual level.

Sunday’s race was very competitive. We were 70 girls with different nationalities. Last year I did one of my best races on this course and qualified for the European Cup, this year I didn’t do well. I wasn’t expecting to do so, but it hurts anyway. I’m used to race on another level and I was not even close to that on Sunday. I have explanations for my performance. I know I have just trained for about 2 months and that I had a knee surgery in January, but I was expecting a bit more. I just have to realize that I need to start from scratch and fight my way back…

My dear friend Vera Vilaça supporting me at the finish line…

Next weekend I’m back racing again, both Saturday and Sunday. All these races serve as a preparation for my main goals this season, the European AG Championship in May and the Time trial in cycling in July.

I’m looking forward to those races, especially the cycling time trial. This year I will not only be representing Sporting Clube de Portugal in Triathlon but we will have a female cycling team too. I’m super happy to be able to represent my club in cycling.

Today I got a real nice surprise… I got a parcel sent to my office with a new helmet from Spiuk  :o)  it was love at first sight! Thank you so much Spiuk Portugal for standing by me in good and bad moments, you are great
